Our new Tilt-Shift lens – Architectural photography

We are always looking to upgrade our know-how and kit to capture the best images for our clients, and we recently made the jump into tilt-shift lenses. Unlike a standard lens, this counteracts the usual distortion typically seen in architectural photography, causing buildings and any lines to converge unnaturally.

A tilt-shift lens allows us to change the position of the imaging circle. By tilting the lens, you change the centre of that imaging circle, which can straighten the lines that appear to converge in the distance. Here is an example using a standard wide-angle lens:

The building seems to ‘fall away’ from us due to the positioning of the lens circle in relation to the subject, making it look unnatural to the eye. We can fix this by physically moving the lens circle in relation the to subject. Here is an example using the shift lens.

That’s much better! We have had the opportunity to use this new lens on a few projects recently, and our clients are very happy with the results. It’s great for wide establishing building shots but also interiors as well, as it keeps all the lines nice and straight and also allows us to emphasise certain aspects within the frame. For example at a shoot for Liberty Tile Studios, we wanted to emphasise the tiled flooring rather than the ceiling, so we tilted the lens down, giving us a more comprehensive view of the tiles on offer.
